Letter to Australian College of Midwives - re Kevin Rudd & Nicola Roxons visit to Lismore - 24th August 2009.
Dear Pat & ACM Executive Members
The rural lobbyist were busy yesterday with Kevin Rudd & Nicola Roxon first electorate Q & A consultations in Lismore.
With the 'Every Woman Every Choice' banner being displayed outside the venue and although not invited, NBERC - with its supportive connections was able to contribute to the discussions.  Georgia (a young first time mother) was able to represent the current Midwifery dilema in a private unplanned consultation with Nicola regarding NBERC's model of collaborative care. Nicola seemed very interested but unfortunately took Georgia's explanation of NBERC's model of care to be the norm for all homebirths in our area - when in fact the model is primarily only guaranteed by NBERC services.  Georgia would very much like to see the NBERC model extended throughout Australia. The statistical data from the model will be available at the end of this year.
Georgia, whilst addressing the need for private midwifery compensation for women seeking out-of-hospital safe midwifery care, felt the Minister to be very keen to listen and open to hearing of new innovative ideas. It was explained to Nicola that NBERC has a local OB/GYN (Dr Steele) on its board and all clients are encouraged to see an OB for key check ups  (28 & 36 wks) during their pregnancy, book into the local hospital and with all other care being maintained by a Midwife.
With this in mind, NBERC's funding proposal for Private Midwives to work under our collaborative care model has again been emailed to Nicola.
Thank you for being at the helm and in helping the variety of safe maternity options to be easily accessed by women.
As always - Warm regards
Margaret Spain (Santo)
