A Doula as a professional birth attendant
It is necessary for any person who declares themselves to be a Doula to have attended training.
A Doula is not a Midwife and is not trained in the skills of a Midwife. However instead a Doula is a support to a Midwifery or Obstetric team. The doula can enhance the birth experience for a family, and can provide pre & post-natal support. Typically, a doula will meet with the family during pregnancy to build a strong relationship and practice the techniques used in labour that can enhance a gentle outcome. During labour the doula remains with the woman to support both the woman and her family needs until after the baby is born. Some Doula's prefer not to attend the births but rather assist the families either prior to or after the birth. The Doula is a valuable person especially within the hospital environment when busy practitioners are not able to be 'with the woman' at all times. In this situation the Doula can provide care-giving continuity.
Testimony from a Previous Doula Day Workshop
Doula Course Praise
"Now, if I was actually thinking straight I would have said thank you so much for yesterday, I'm still on a bit of high about it all! You and Chris have so much passion and love for the whole birth process that it's infectious. After hearing me rave on and on, my almost 10yr old informed me this morning that she wants to be a doula J (actually that was only after she overheard me telling my mum that I could probably charge about $1000!). I have just finished reading through bits and pieces of "Spiritual Midwifery" about life on 'the farm'; I definitely got similar vibes down there yesterday, a real feel good kind of feeling and a fantastic feeling of sisterhood. You'd think that growing up with 3 older sisters I'd have always had this kind of chick thing happening but unfortunately my family wasn't like that at all. I'm really looking forward to becoming a part of another big family – doulas rock J
I can't wait for the upcoming advanced course and doula day. Now to just get off my bottom and complete the online component oh and my ABA assignment. Gosh and then there's the h/schooling and the washing and the cooking and the playing with my darling munchkins and the loving of my luffly man…
See you soon, take care
Michelle

Does the Doula Training Prepare you to be a Primary Midwife caregiver?
The answer is NO. However, it is a useful foundation prior to training as a Midwife.
The training does not prepare you to take a leading role as a Midwife at an out-of-hospital birth. It does however, prepare you to assist a birthing team of either Midwives, Doctors or Obstetricians who are the clinical attendants for either a hospital or out-of-hospital birth. Doula's are not trained Midwives. We do not prepare doula's to be the primary attendant at a homebirth nor is our training a preparation to support at 'free-births'. A requirement of completing the course is that your register on the National Doula Register (www.doularegister.com). All Doula's who are registered with the National Doula Register agree not to act as a Midwife but instead to be a support to a woman who has a recognised qualified Midwife or Obstetric practitioner in attendance at the birth.
Training Option
After considering our training options we have settled on the Advanced Doula Certificate being conducted as a week long residential course running for 5 full days Monday to Friday (we offer two intensives per year).
Residential Five Day Course
The Advanced Doula Residential Course commences on a Monday morning at 9am and ends on the Friday afternoon at 5 pm (five full days). Our usual networking day workshop will NOT be conducted at the end of the October 2010 residential course, this year. In the past it the Advanced Doula Course has been followed with a day workshop where other trained doula's attend to either update their skills or network with other Doula's and to share stories -a separate fee of $60.00 is charged for this day if you require overnight accomodation after the residential course is completed so that you can attend the Doula Networking day the centre charges a fee of $40.00 (includes breakfast).
Advanced Course Discount (without accommodation)
It is preferable that students utilise the accommodation options (our dinner chats often prove to be the most valuable learning and offer a great time for sharing stories and have become very much a part of the course). However, for those who need to attend to families a reduced fee of $700.00 (+ gst) is available (this includes morning tea lunch each day).
Advanced Course - attendance at required births
The Advanced Course does not include the three births that you are also required to attend. If you would like to contribute to the centre's voluntary support we can at times mentor you through your first three births. If you would like to participate in this way then please discuss this with our administration.
